Relationship Roleplay

Relationship roleplay can be fun, immersive and enticing if it's roleplayed correctly. Many people dislike the thought of relationship roleplay due to the cringe nature of it, or simply the thought of having to roleplay the sexual side of a relationship. While sex is always important within a relationship, it's not entirely necessary and you can still enjoy the perks of roleplaying a relationship with another person while not subjecting yourself to any kind of erotic roleplay.

Starting a Relationship
RCRP is a server based on roleplaying actions exactly the way they'd happen in the real world. Relationships are no different. The stereotype is that guys make the first move, girls give subtle hints, etc., however many relationships don't simply begin from meeting someone face-to-face for the first time. You may roleplay that your character has an interest in the person that they've just met, but it's entirely unrealistic to be straight-up and tell the person you love them as soon as you meet them. Realistically, the first face-to-face meet will usually be simple conversation. The dialogue may seem rather bland but there tends to be a foreshadow within your roleplay, such as the way your character smiles or stares at the other person, or the way your character watches the other person's actions with high intent and curiosity in an attempt to get to know them better. At the end of the conversation, you'll likely ask the person for their number which then leads to texting and something simple for a second meeting, such as coffee or a drink. It's rather unlikely that two people would immediately suggest something formal such as a dinner date, however a casual coffee date goes a long way and will often lead to the two people getting to know each other a lot better. This is likely where both characters will decide whether or not they're "interested" in the other person. Coffee dates can be friendly, so just because two characters share conversation over cups of coffee doesn't meaning that they're in a relationship at all. Make sure you take relationship roleplay slow, as it should often be done in the real world, to gain a grasp for the other person's roleplay and to establish whether or not you actually want to roleplay your characters being together. Your OOC intentions will assist you in roleplaying the relationship: it's extremely unlikely that you'd be at all willing to roleplay a relationship with somebody who has roleplay that you dislike. It's quite likely that your character would text the other person and express their delight of their company with something simple, whether it be through metaphorically describing how you loved the day simply due to the coffee place being your favourite place to grab a brew. The two characters will likely progress with minor dates until one expresses direct interest in the other. If this is agreed upon, a formal date will likely follow. This is usually referred to as the "first date" and the result of this will determine the future for such a relationship. For example, a hug will probably lead to nothing more than friends while more intimate actions, such as a kiss, will definitely signify the start of a relationship. Keep in mind that not all relationships begin like this, however the preceding paragraph might give you an idea of how a relationship could begin. Other ways might include advertisement, dating sites or even being straight to the point and expressing an interest in taking the person out for dinner. Roleplay is the way you find realistic and please don't be cringy while you're doing it. Remember you're roleplaying adults (most of the time) and not simple teenagers; it's understandable that many people roleplaying a relationship are adolescents but try and engage in the mind of your character and not your own.

Relationship Progression
A relationship should progress with a healthy balance of curiosity, excitement and lust once both people confess a liking for each other. There's the curiosity of the future of your relationship, as well as the excitement of being with the person and the lust, which steps in for the sexual side of the relationship. It's entirely up to you whether you want to roleplay the lust or sexual part of a relationship or not. Some people find it cringe, embarrassing or otherwise uncomfortable, which is entirely understandable. Once again, don't let this deduct from the roleplay as a whole. One thing that should be stressed is that you don't stop dating during a relationship. Well-planned dates fuel relationships; a chain-link of romantic and well-thought events throughout the day and leading into the night can be extremely enjoyable for both parties. On one side, there's the enjoyment of being taken out to special locations and being treated well and on the other side there's the enjoyment of watching the person you love spending time with smile at each location you take them, which is why dates work for both parties. Sometimes simplicity goes a long way; an ice cream paired with a walk on the beach during a sunset can set an extremely romantic mood while also having that slight tint of nostalgia of childhood delight due to the ice cream.

Cheating
Don't cheat for no reason. This simply cannot be stressed enough. If you enjoy the sexual side of relationships, this is no excuse to cheat on your partner if you're roleplaying being happy with your character and cheating can lead to detrimental development for your character. It does make slight sense for your character to cheat on your partner if they're unhappy with the relationship or their partner treats them horribly, however you might want to consider simply roleplaying a break-up rather than having to deal with the consequences of developing a character that's cheated on their partner. Cheating is not always to do with the opposing side. If your character is extremely stressed due to work (for example, an overload of work while in SACSO) they might consider going for a drink alone, which could lead to them meeting somebody else and ending up getting drunk and cheating on their partner. This doesn't permit you to disregard the repercussions that will occur if your character cheats on their partner. They'd most definitely be overcome with:
  • Guilt
  • Upset
  • Sorrow
  • Depression
  • General Notes
    The following general notes should probably be followed during relationship roleplay:
    • Just because you don't want to roleplay sexual acts doesn't mean you can't develop the fact that your characters have had sex together;
    • Your characters actions will likely depend on the consciousness of what their partner will think;
    • Your character should vent and offload their troubles onto their partner, but they should be willing to listen to their partner's problems equally;
    • Keep your relationship fully IC. If you're roleplaying with your character's partner, don't sit in a Teamspeak channel with them and avoid /b by all means unless you have to;
    • If your character is illegal, it's likely that they'll want to hide that side of them from their partner or simply from the person that they have a crush on. Equally, any bad habits will often be hidden from their partner out of fear of them being disliked;
    • Don't troll around with your roleplay. This should be taken as a general note for any kind of roleplay, but trollish roleplay during a relationship will end in a disintegration of you and your immersion with your character;
    • Think of tiny, cute things for your character to do for your partner. Put detail into your roleplay that some people might not think of to gain a reaction from your character's partner, such as the scent of cologne or perfume or the style of clothing. This is especially important during more erotic roleplay. Some cute things might include gifts, flowers, massages or even surprise dates; and
    • Remember to have fun. If you don't enjoy roleplaying a relationship, simply don't do it. If you feel uncomfortable with any of the roleplay that's going on between your two characters, you might want to let the other person know in PMs or simply find an IC excuse to get out of it. Having fun is by far the most important part of relationship roleplay and if that's removed, there's simply no point in continuing such roleplay.

    I considered doing a mini guide to erotic roleplay but that wouldn't end well.

    If you're looking for role models when it comes to IC dating characters: Lars & Rose Jameson (formerly Spencer). I kind of wish they published a character story cause they're acing all the right corners.

    AND, dating is not all about esex and being lovey-dovey, y'know?

    Agreed! It's a shame that people are diverted from relationship roleplay due to that aspect of it.
