Although this is without question a pretty helpful thread for most, it is actually very out-dated and not entirely true. I understand this post was written a fair old while ago now, but some of the information in it was even out-dated then. You would find a lot of the information here to be true typically in the 1970's and 80's; but in the modern day motorcycle culture, this is very out-dated. Things have changed.
