While substance abuse is a common issue in American law enforcement, nobody does it with hard drugs such as cocaine or heroin out of fear of being detected. Instead, you should roleplay abusing prescription drugs such as painkillers or anything similar. That's what most substance abuse consists of in American police. Again, don't just do it because you think it's cool, because that just ends up looking silly. Do it if you have proper development behind it and a valid justification to be using drugs.
