Sureños, also known as southerners - Southsiders are either referred to as a Sureno clique, gang or soldier belonging to a SUR-X3 gang (and) or La Eme, Sureños its self is a movement made up by loosely and variously affiliated cliques and gangs, it was founded in the 1900s in Southern California, with a small presence in New York and Chicago, they have riddled LA with gang crime.
The movement started due to a prison conflict between the Mexican Mafia and Nuestra Familia, which is why most Hispanic gangs clique up with one or the other, except regarding special cases such as Maravilla or Bulldogs.
Sureños represent the trece (13) as their symbolic letter; M, which comes from the Mexican Mafia, common ink like three dots, the typography "X3" or "XIII" are seen on most affiliates. Sureños represent blue and grey clothing brands or nichès, such as LA Dodgers, however, they do not actively color bang anymore but make use of common Chicano clothing (EG: khakis, Charlie Brown polos, shorts), unlike some Norteno gangs which still represent their bull red colors.
Sureños used to be heavily territoria (and still are), but in the modern era they cover various areas in criminal activity, some include firearms and substance trafficking.
In 1970 to 1980, the true modern Mexican Mafia was split from its old-school part in Arizona's CO Facility: La Eme.
Following various internal conflicts from Eme and Mexican Mafia, the "mob" its self started setting "built-in-stone" regulations (however still not as literal as Nuestra Familia's code of conduct and discipline), Cadena had made the Sureno in - Sureno out oath; a prison Sureno may continue their criminal association within the free world, or be killed as a dropout otherwise.
In 1990 the federal authorities have started recognizing the Mexican mob as a seriously violent organization, which caused a RICO indictment against the organization, resulting in over 22 arrests, with 36 in the 2000s and 110 in 2010.
Sureno gangs in the outside world have been known for their borderline EBK attitude, hence some sets beefing against each other, however, it is etiquette that SUR inmates cannot beef with other fellow soldiers in prison.
In order to be inducted into the Mexican Mafia, a candidate needed to be sponsored by an insider member and have priors of kicking it with a Sureños street gang, however, both requirements are not actively enforced anymore.
The Mexican Mafia used to be heavily racial alongside its street gangs back then, but in the modern age both have been documented to induct white (due to relations with the Aryan car) and Asian Americans as long said individuals have put in work for the street trece, keep in mind that this consists of a 0.1%.
Women can become experienced associates but they can't become true made members, they work in their own cliques also generally named as Las Señoras or Sureñas. These cliques are formed of women involved in highly violent street priors themselves, they're considered mainly as a "middle-point" figure for covert activities such as messages to the street world (due to the fore-seen innocency of a wife visiting his husband in prison, as an example), they have a decent amount of power outside the penitentiary as they can act on behalf of their made men and handle various finances, this is known by police forces and correctional agencies but is still the standard modus operandi for most scenarios.

The Mexican Mafia is an organized crime organization that has risen from the California prison system back in 1960 following Rodolfo Cadena's murder in San Quentin's prison (originally founded by 13 rumored juveniles), which started a slaying spree between prison cliques. Shortly after Eme's complete control on various penitentiaries, many affiliates got fed up and started a counter-face organization against the Eme AKA Nuestra Familia, one of the first conflicts was when a Sureno stole an NF affiliate's shoes, as a result of this about nineteen inmates were stabbed, with one Emero dead.
