Getting lured into a scam via /advert

So today Leroy_Miller made an advert about a Voodoo for sale for $15,000. I SMS him asking if he could drop it to $10,000 but we made a deal of $12,000. He then tells me that it's a scam and I read through the rules and it says;

  • You may not rob someone by pretending to buy/sell assets like vehicles, houses or businesses and luring them into a trap.
However, this is allowed when buying/selling illegal items like weapons and drugs.
And he told me that scamming isn't under that rule. I was wondering if this is true of false. We had a little argument but I let him off with the scam.

I was also told by an admin once that we were allowed to do it when my friend and I were going to do it.

I just want this to get confirmed so I could chill a little.

Well,
If he robbed you off your money and assets, then he's going against the rules here.
But!
If he simply scammed you, like, let's say, making you pay the 10k that was agreed and then dipping, then no rules were broken.

Hey Supreme,

I think this is a little context dependant as "a scam" can have two separate meanings in this context. I will just briefly go over the two and explain how you can deal with them the best. Let's start, shall we?

So the first context is. He tried selling it for 15 thousand, you were trying to haggle and in the end, you bought the vehicle for 12.000 dollars. Instead of using the /sell vehicle command to make sure he was the legitimate owner you decided to write him a check or use /pay at which he decided to bail and leave, log or whatever. In this case, this is not allowed. As you stated and quoted yourself it is not allowed to pretend you are selling an asset to make sure someone shows up with a lot of cash to them scam/rob him. The best action you can undertake is to make an official complaint in Complaint section at the forum.

Secondly, If you bought the vehicle for 12,000 dollars in the end and you did receive the vehicle. He probably refers to it being a ridiculously low price for such a vehicle and that he feels like he has been scammed due to you being able to haggle it down to such a low price. "A Scam" means a very bad deal in his eyes in this context. This is all In-Character as your characters both had their saying and either party could withdraw from the deal at any time. If this is what he meant with "a scam" the rules above do not apply and both of you should just continue without any additional actions to be taken.

However I do think we are talking about the first context I've written out, some small additional information like did you receive the vehicle in the end, did the player just walk off or log out. would massively help us trying to help you out.

Kind Regards,

@Gido Let me put this into more detail so you can tell me who's right or wrong.

Leroy made an advert that he was selling a Voodoo for $15,000. I called him and we decided to make the deal of $12,000. I write him a check of $12,000 and I sign the papers. He did /givesharedkey and I accepted it. I then pretended that I thought I bought the car but when I ICly wanted to sell the vehicle I would have realised ICly that the papers are forged and not real. Leroy and his friend Alex walked off once I got into the car and took off.

they should add scamming to that rule too, it’s pathetic to earn money.
imagine if it was a new noobie player that saved all his money to buy a cheap car and then he gets scammed like this cuz he doesn’t know how the script works.

Hello All,

Said scammer here!

In-regards to scamming a newbie this is covered in the Scamming and Robbing rules that people need to read more carefully! Their often miss-interrupted. Let me do some copy n pasting...

  • The player you're robbing and/or scamming must be level THREE or higher.
  • You yourself need to be level THREE or higher in order to scam and/or rob.
  • You may not assist when robbing and/or scamming a player until you are level THREE in the interests of fairness.
Exception to this: In the interest of fairness, committing illegal acts such as dealing drugs or using illegal weapons as a level 1 or 2 removes the under-level-3 protection. This means that other players will be allowed to rob or scam you in such a situation, despite of your level not being high enough.

So as stated above you can not scam anyone under level 3, If the goods in-relation to the scam are legal. Such as a vehicle, preventing me/the scammer scamming a newbie. If the goods are how-ever illegal such as a weapon or drugs then the scam level restriction is lifted.

In-regards to luring somebody in via an advertisement, The specifically states "rob" now robbing someone and scamming someone are two separate things, You can actually find the definitions of both on the Scamming/Robbing rules:

  • Theft/Stealing: Taking something that doesn't belong to you.
Robbery: Taking something that doesn't belong to you from another person by using force, or the threat of force.
Burglary: Entering a structure, without authorization, with the intent of committing a crime within.
Scamming: A fraudulent scheme with the intent to cheat/swindle someone of their goods by means of a trick. (If an item is given voluntarily, whatever happens after still falls under scamming, as long as the other general server rules are still followed.)
Confiscation: Taking possession of something by legal authorities.
In real life people are often scammed through advertisements and cheated out of their money. I hope this clears up that everything mentioned above was entirely within the rules. I understand the Scamming and Robbing rules are often not understood fully by everyone, But If you spend the time to read them in detail you get the grasp of it.

If anyone wants more detail regarding this specific scam that was done, The documents provided to the victim to sign the vehicle over are actually forged/fake (This has been RPed). If the victim does a /do What would the documents read/say... something along those lines it will become clear to them that these are forged documents or fake documents for the sale of a bicycle, Thus giving them chance to respond effectively ICly. (Probably ends up in the scammer taken a beating)

All role played within the rules and with fair chances to both sides :)

you can have noobs that are level three and you don’t need to explain the rules to us we know where to find them mate.

just saying they should edit that rule and add scamming too.

In my experience I'd say any level 3 has experience with the vehicle mechanics in the script at that point. How-ever fair point not everyone is up to speed on everything at level 3, But that's the level chosen by management. Clearing up the rules because two different people (Both helpers) gave different takes on the scenario, one of which being incorrect. Just sharing my opinion and knowledge on the topic buddy! :) :)
